Start with the reference, not the price
Vacheron Constantin's Patrimony line began in 2004. The design copies a 1957 model with a round case, thin bezel, and dauphine hands. Replicas track two main shapes: the 40 mm self-winding and the 36 mm or 42 mm variants. Pick a diameter before you shop. A seller who lists "Patrimony replica" with no diameter is selling a generic case with a logo.
Genuine self-winding Patrimony 40 mm cases measure about 7.7 mm thick and hold the caliber 1120, a 2.45 mm automatic that runs at 19,800 vibrations per hour. That number is the hardest part to fake. Most replica cases run 9 mm to 11 mm because the movement inside is thicker than the 1120.
Parameters to check before you pay
- Case diameter and lug-to-lug distance. Ask for caliper photos, not listing text.
- Case thickness. Under 8.5 mm is close to the real profile. Over 10 mm is a different watch on the wrist.
- Movement. Request a photo of the rotor through the display back. Miyota 9015, Sea-Gull ST18, and ETA 2824 copies all appear in this case shape. The caliber 1120 has a 40-hour reserve and beats at 19,800 vph.
- Crystal. Sapphire with inner anti-reflective coating. Mineral glass scratches and reflects light.
- Dial. Applied gold or gold-plated markers, not printed. Check the spacing of the wordmark and the "GENÈVE" text under it.
- Hands. Faceted dauphine hands with a center crease and polished edges.
- Strap and buckle. Alligator-grain leather, 20 mm at the lugs, pin buckle stamped with the Maltese cross.
- Caseback. Engraved reference and serial numbers. Laser-etched stickers peel off.
- Water resistance. Genuine is rated 30 m. Most replicas do not seal. Do not swim in one.
Price tiers
Budget replicas sell for $120 to $250. Expect quartz or a low-grade automatic, mineral glass, and gold-tone plating that wears through in months. Mid-tier runs $250 to $600 with a sapphire crystal and a Japanese or Chinese automatic. Higher grades run $600 to $1,200 and use Swiss ETA or a decorated copy, thicker plating, and a closer case profile. An authentic Patrimony self-winding 40 mm in pink gold lists around $27,000 and above. Any replica priced near $1,500 is a claim, not a product tier.
How to Spot a Fake Patrimony Manual Wind
Pitfalls
- "Swiss made clone movement." No factory sells a working copy of the caliber 1120 at replica prices. The claim is marketing.
- Stock photos. Ask for timestamped photos of the watch in hand.
- Gold content. Plated steel weighs less than 18k gold of the same size. Density differs by about half.
- No returns. Buy from sellers with a stated return window and a track record.
- Payment method. Wire transfers and crypto leave no recourse if the watch never ships.
