The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 5402ST is thin on purpose. Gérald Genta drew it in 1971, AP put it on the market in 1972, and the entire idea was a steel sports watch that measured 39mm across while sitting under 8mm tall. That proportion is the design. - No quick-set date. You advance the date by rolling the hands past midnight again and again. It is genuinely annoying, and that annoyance is authentic.
- An octagonal bezel held by eight hexagonal screws that pass through the case. On the back they appear as a ring of eight nuts.
- A solid caseback engraved with the reference, the case number, and the Royal Oak name.
- A flat Petite Tapisserie dial with a tight waffle grid, an applied AP logo at 12, and a date window at 3.
Where replicas break down
Thickness. This is the first tell and the easiest to test. A Miyota 9015 runs about 3.9mm before you add a dial, hands, and a caseback. An ETA 2824 is thicker still. Even builders who shave the caseback and fit a slim reworked movement often land at 8.5mm or more. Put calipers on the case flank beside the bezel and the number usually tells the story before you look at anything else.
