What a fake Rotonde Earth & Moon is
A fake Rotonde Earth & Moon is a replica of the Cartier Rotonde de Cartier Earth and Moon, a round Cartier watch with a moon that travels around a turning Earth disc. No replica on the market reproduces that mechanism. Listings use the name for two different things: a plain moon-phase watch with a printed globe on the dial, and a copy with a small disc that turns once per day. The genuine watch is a limited production piece in a 47 mm platinum case with an in-house movement.
What the genuine watch does
Cartier showed the Rotonde de Cartier Earth and Moon in 2014. Launch coverage reported a 47 mm case in platinum and a hand-wound in-house caliber. The dial carries an Earth disc and a moon. The cycle it follows is the synodic month of 29.53 days, the same period used by standard moon-phase watches. Cartier has not published a full spec sheet for every variant. Numbers differ between sources, so check a reference number against auction lot pages before you trust a seller.
What replicas contain
- Case: steel or plated brass. Most measure 40 mm to 44 mm, not 47 mm.
- Glass: mineral on the cheap tier, sapphire on the better ones.
- Movement: quartz in most listings, or a decorated automatic with a glued-on moon disc.
- Moon display: printed, or driven by a 24-hour gear. A 24-hour moon is wrong by about 5.5 days per month.

- Ask for the movement name and number, plus a photo of the caseback with the rotor or bridges visible.
