Short answer
Cartier does not publish a reference 33649. Cartier Ballon Bleu references start with W, for example W69012Z4. The code 33649 shows up in replica listings, where sellers use it for a Ballon Bleu 36 mm automatic with a steel case, a fluted crown at 3 o'clock, and a blue cabochon. Treat 33649 as a seller code, not a factory reference. Ask the seller for the case diameter, movement name, crystal type, and caseback text in writing before you pay.
What the genuine 36 mm Ballon Bleu uses
Cartier launched the Ballon Bleu in 2007. The 36 mm steel automatic has a round case with a domed back, a crown guard that wraps the crown, and a blue spinel cabochon set into the crown. Cartier lists the case at about 36.6 mm across and about 12 mm thick, with 30 m water resistance. The dial carries a guilloché texture, Roman numerals, and a date window at 3 o'clock. The movement is a Cartier automatic with a power reserve in the 38 to 42 hour range.
Replica tiers and prices
- Under $60: quartz or low-grade automatic, mineral glass, stamped dial, glued cabochon. Case often measures 38 to 40 mm.
- $100 to $250: Chinese automatic (Seagull ST2130, Hangzhou 6300, or an ETA 2824 clone), sapphire crystal on better examples, 316L steel.
- $300 to $600: closer case profile, decorated rotor, AR-coated sapphire, cleaner dial print and crown.
Claims of a Swiss ETA inside a replica are hard to verify. Swatch Group cut third-party ETA ebauche supply starting in 2011. A Swiss label most often means a Chinese movement with a swapped rotor or engraved bridge.
Checks before buying
- Measure the case with calipers. A 36 mm build that arrives at 39 mm wears as a different watch.
- Ask for movement photos. A 2824 clone shows a balance wheel and regulator. A quartz watch shows a battery.
- Look at the crown. The cabochon sits in a fluted crown under the guard. Glued glass falls out.
- Read the caseback. Engraving depth and font matter more than the text.
- Weigh the watch. Hollow links and thin steel read light on a kitchen scale.
- Keep it out of water. Gaskets on replicas are unverified. No swimming, no shower.
Legal and ownership notes
In the US, importing counterfeit goods violates 19 U.S.C. § 1526, and CBP can seize the shipment. Selling counterfeits carries civil penalties. A replica is not a Cartier, carries no Cartier warranty, and cannot be serviced by Cartier. Resale value is close to zero. Service on a Chinese automatic runs $50 to $150 at an independent watchmaker, and parts availability depends on the movement.
