Buy a replica crash skeleton only after you see the movement, not the marketing photos. Three checks decide quality: how the movement is skeletonized, how the case curve reads on the wrist, and how the watch runs over 24 hours. If a seller will not show the movement or give a rate number, walk away.
What a Crash Skeleton Is
The crash case is a distorted, stretched oval that traces back to a damaged Cartier watch from the 1960s London workshop. A skeleton version removes the dial so the gear train and bridges become the face of the watch. Reproducing that takes two separate skills: shaping a case that curves without looking dented, and cutting a movement so the wheels read as a pattern instead of a pile of parts. Most replicas fail at one of the two.
Before You Buy
- A phone macro lens or a 10x loupe for case and dial photos.
- A timegrapher app, or a watchmaker who will run one for you.
- Reference photos of the original from three angles: front, side, crown side.
- The seller's return window in writing, with return shipping cost stated.
- A price ceiling set before you start shopping.
Inspection Steps
- Ask for a video of the watch running with the seconds hand in frame for at least 60 seconds.
- Compare the case profile against your reference photos at the 12 and 6 positions.
- Request a straight-on photo of the caseback and movement with the rotor held still.
- Study the skeleton cuts and look for a beveled or polished edge on every bridge.
- Check that the crown sits centered in the case band and pulls out in two or three distinct positions.
- Time the watch over 24 hours against a phone clock and record the gain or loss.
- Inspect the lug-to-strap junction for gaps or a strap that sits off center.
- Tip the crystal against a light source and check the edges for distortion or a milky ring.
- Pay a deposit only, hold the balance until the watch arrives, then repeat steps 4 through 7.

Finishing
A genuine skeleton movement has bridges that were cut and then finished by hand. A faked one uses a solid plate with holes milled into it, or a printed pattern on a flat surface. Under the loupe, a true cut edge catches light in a thin bright line along its length. A milled edge looks dull and rounded, and a printed pattern has no depth at all.
Rate and Power Reserve
Ask for the daily rate in seconds and the amplitude figure. A clone of an ETA or a Seagull movement can hold within 15 seconds per day when regulated. Wind the watch fully, set it to an exact time, and leave it alone. Check it again at 24 hours. If it loses more than a minute or stops overnight, the mainspring or the service state is the problem.
Case and Dial Checks
Look for one continuous curve from lug tip to lug tip. A flat spot near the lugs, a polished edge that changes width around the case, or a bezel that sits proud on one side all point to a case that was pressed from a poor mold. On skeleton dials, check that the hour markers are applied and aligned with the movement, since a printed track on a glass chapter ring is a common shortcut.
After You Receive It
- Photograph the packaging and the box contents before you open anything.
- Run the watch for 48 hours on your wrist and log the daily deviation.
- Take it to a local watchmaker for regulation if it drifts past 15 seconds per day.
- Keep it away from showers, pools, and dishwater unless the case is rated for it.
- Store it on a winder or wind it twice a week so the lubricants stay in motion.
