Short answer

Replica Jaeger-LeCoultre mechanical watches are copies built on JLC case shapes. Prices run from about $150 to $600. Most carry a Chinese or Japanese movement, not a JLC caliber. Common choices are the Seagull ST19, the Miyota 9015, and clones of the ETA 2824. The Reverso is the hardest model to copy. Its case flips on a sliding carriage, and that carriage needs tight tolerances. Replica Reverso cases run 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm thicker than the genuine case.

Movements inside replica JLC watches

Jaeger-LeCoultre builds rectangular and round calibers in Le Sentier. JLC lists the caliber 822 as a hand-wind movement with 108 parts, 21,600 vph, and a 45 hour power reserve. That rectangular shape is hard to clone, so replica Reverso cases often hide a smaller round movement behind a spacer plate.

Round replicas take standard clones. The Miyota 9015 runs at 28,800 vph with 24 jewels and a 42 hour power reserve. ETA 2824 clones use the same 28,800 vph beat rate. A 28,800 vph unit gives a smoother second hand than a 21,600 vph unit. The trade-off is a shorter service life on cheap clones.

Case sizes to compare

  • Reverso Classic Medium Thin: 40.1 mm x 24.4 mm
  • Reverso Classic Large: 45.6 mm x 27.4 mm
  • Master Control Date: 40 mm round
  • Polaris Date: 42 mm round
  • Ultra Thin Moon: 39 mm round

Measure the listing against the JLC spec sheet. A 2 mm gap in length shows on the wrist.

Price tiers

$150 to $250 buys a 316L steel case, mineral or sapphire glass, and a basic clone movement. $300 to $450 adds a sapphire crystal with antireflective coating, better dial printing, and a 28,800 vph movement. $500 to $600 covers the top tier: closer case finishing, a decorated rotor, and a moon phase disc that tracks the correct cycle. Reverso replicas sit at the top of these ranges because of the flip mechanism.

Inspection list

  1. Weigh the watch. Genuine steel JLC cases feel dense. A light case points to a hollow build.
  2. Flip the Reverso case ten times. The carriage should move with even tension and no rattle.
  3. Check the dial text. "JAEGER-LECOULTRE" has even letter spacing. Blurry print is a bad sign.
  4. Look at the moon phase. The disc should advance one step per day, not jump.
  5. Set the time and watch the second hand. A stutter means the movement needs service.
  6. Test the crown. It should pull to each position with a clear click.
  7. Check water resistance claims. Most replicas rate 3 ATM, and the seals may run dry.
  8. Open the caseback if the seller allows it. Look for a branded rotor and clean screws.

Accuracy and service

Clone movements leave the factory with a rate of about plus or minus 10 to 20 seconds a day. A watchmaker can regulate most of them to plus or minus 10 seconds. Service runs on a five to seven year cycle, the same as a genuine JLC. Parts for clone movements cost less than JLC parts. A watchmaker cannot order JLC parts for a replica, so a broken genuine caliber in a replica case is a dead end.

Legal status in the US

US Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit goods at the border. Selling a replica as a genuine watch is trademark infringement. Selling it as a replica sits in a gray zone in some states, so check local law. Buyers should treat the purchase as a copy and price it as a copy.
