The short answer
"Portofino 27" is almost never an IWC reference number. Genuine Portofino references are four digits behind an IW prefix, like IW356501 or IW458601. The 27 comes from a replica seller's own catalog, so the same number can point to different watches on different sites. Before you compare anything, get the listing to state the case diameter and the movement. That tells you which real Portofino it is copying, and it is the only honest way to judge how close the thing gets.
Which real Portofino it maps to
Listings that use a code like "Portofino 27" usually trace back to one of three watches.
- Portofino Automatic 40 (IW3565 family). 40mm steel case, roughly 9.2mm thick, date at 3 o'clock, leaf hands, Roman or baton markers. This is the most common target.
- Portofino Automatic 37 (IW4586 family). 37mm case with the same dial layout, built for smaller wrists. The diamond-set versions are copied badly, so expect mismatched settings if you see them.
- Portofino Chronograph (IW3910 family). 42mm case, three subdials, day and date, and a much thicker profile near 13.5mm.
If a seller will not give you a diameter, treat the listing as generic. Replica listings reuse the same photos across several models, so the picture often is not the watch.
What the better versions get right
The mid and upper tiers copy the case shape well. The lugs curve the way they should, the bezel is thin, and the dial has the clean, plain look that makes the Portofino easy to live with. Sapphire crystal with a proper anti-reflective coating shows up on better examples, and the applied markers sit flat instead of floating. Strap quality varies more than anything else, which is why so many owners swap to a decent leather band on day one.
Where they fall short
Thickness is the giveaway. A replica of the 40mm automatic often runs 1mm to 2mm thicker because the movement and spacer do not match the original architecture. The date font is usually the second tell: the genuine window uses a fine, tall numeral, while copies lean heavy and wide. Printing on the dial can be slightly soft, and the crown often feels gritty when you set the time. Water resistance is a guess unless the seller pressure-tested it, and most do not.
Movements you will see
- Miyota 9015: Japanese automatic, thin, hacking, common in the better non-chronograph copies.
- Seiko NH35: reliable and cheap, but thicker, so the case usually gains height.
- ETA 2824 clones: Chinese-made copies of a Swiss design. Quality swings between batches.
- Sellita SW200 or a 2892 clone: the top tier, and the tier where the price jumps hard.
- A7750 copies: used in chronograph versions, and the one movement most likely to arrive with problems.
A 40mm three-hander with a Miyota 9015 is the sweet spot for most people. Chronographs add failure points for very little gain.
The part listings leave out
In the United States, importing counterfeit goods is illegal. Customs can seize the parcel, and repeat shipments can lead to civil penalties. No replica carries a manufacturer warranty, no authorized service center will touch it, and parts are not interchangeable with the real watch. Resale value is close to zero. If any of that matters to you, the honest move is a used genuine watch or a well-made homage from a legitimate brand. If you buy anyway, buy knowing the tradeoffs instead of discovering them later.
How to read a listing before you commit
- Ask for the exact case diameter and thickness, and compare both to the real reference.
- Request real photos of the actual watch, not stock renders. Ask for the date window and the caseback.
- Confirm the movement by name, not by the word "Swiss."
- Check whether the crystal is sapphire or mineral glass.
- Ask what happens if it arrives dead or loses time. Sellers with a real return policy answer that question directly.
The Portofino is a simple watch, which is exactly why it is hard to fake well. Simple means every flaw is visible. Judge the thickness, the date font, and the finishing on the case flanks, and you will know more in five minutes than any listing description will tell you.
