Start with the reference number, not the listing
Rolex built the Submariner 16610 from 1988 to 2010. Genuine specs: 40 mm case, 20 mm lug width, 12.5 mm thick, 300 m water resistance, caliber 3135, sapphire crystal, aluminum bezel insert, black dial. A rep that misses any of those numbers is wrong at the case level. Check those numbers before you read the rest of a listing.

Four questions to ask before payment
- Which movement is inside? Ask for a photo of the movement with the caseback off.
- What are the case dimensions? Ask for a caliper photo against the case.
- What is the rate and amplitude? Ask for a timegrapher photo with a timestamp.
- What is the return window? Get the terms in writing.
Movement tiers
- Quartz: $60 to $120. The seconds hand ticks once per second. Wrong for a 16610.
- Asia 2824 or 2836: $150 to $350. Runs at 28,800 vph. Sweep looks close. Date change is slower than a 3135.
- SA3135 or SH3135: $400 to $600. Clone of the 3135. Roughly 40 hour power reserve. Parts interchange with genuine is partial.
- VR3135: $600 to $900. Better finishing and tighter tolerances.
- Claimed Swiss ETA 2824: above $700. Ask for a photo of the movement stamp.
Case, bezel, dial
Case steel is 316L or 904L. The 904L option costs more and takes a polish closer to the original. The 16610 bezel insert is aluminum. A ceramic insert is a tell, since ceramic arrived with the 116610 in 2010. The cyclops magnifies the date 2.5x. Marker surrounds are white gold on the genuine watch. Look at the crown guard shape and the lug holes, since early 16610 cases had drilled lugs and later ones did not.

Pitfalls
- Stolen photos. Run a reverse image search on every picture in the listing.
- Water resistance claims. Seals on most reps fail above 30 m. Test before you swim.
- Movement swaps. The watch that arrives may not match the photo you approved.
- Customs. Import of counterfeit goods into the United States is illegal under 19 U.S.C. 1526. CBP can seize the parcel and send the notice to the buyer.
- Payment. Wire and crypto leave no chargeback path. Card and escrow do.
- Serial and engraving. Ask for photos of the caseback and clasp codes. Many listings show none.
Price bands
$150 to $350 buys an Asia 2824 build in a 316L case. $400 to $700 buys a 3135 clone with better dial alignment. Above $800 you pay for finishing and, in most cases, a claim about Swiss parts. No replica at any price has a genuine Rolex case, dial, or movement.
